Most spec homes play it safe. The #NotYourBasicSpecHome project proved there’s a better
way. As part of a 50+ home neighborhood designed for first-time buyers, this home needed to
stand out—especially as a 2023 Parade of Homes feature.
While the builder’s in-house designer handled the finishes for the other homes, we came on board for this showcase property to demonstrate how small, intentional choices can create a big impact.
We traded predictable finishes for bolder moves: darker trim and cabinetry, a modern steel + glass barn door, and a built-in banquette to maximize seating in a compact dining area. Instead of a basic hallway closet, we designed a statement built-in with open shelving and lower drawer storage—blending form and function in a way most spec homes overlook.
The #NotYourBasicSpecProject proved that thoughtful design isn’t just for custom
homes—it belongs in every space.
